The Only Solution: MaKuNe’s Resignation

Only 26 days are left until the deadline for the drafting of the new constitution. I don’t need to tell you that the deadline will not be met. So, the question arises: what will happen after that?

There is no provision in the interim constitution for this scenario. So, the constitution assembly as well as the government will lose legal validity. They will have no legal standing to continue the drafting of the constitution and to rule the country. In this scenario, some force (the president, the prime minister or the army itself) will have to unconstitutionally (illegally) take control.

This will not be acceptable to Maoists, who are not in the government and who have been sidelined for the past few months. They are not going to tolerate an unconstitutional move of any force to take over. This could easily lead the country back to a civil war, which will be deadlier than last time. All the achievements made during the peace process will be gone.

We cannot afford another civil war. The country has already seen enough blood. So, what is the solution? There is only one. Within the next 26 days, the interim constitution should be amended to include the present scenario of unmet-deadline. The interim constitution can be amended to postpone the deadline of the constitution.

But, to amend the constitution, 2/3 majority is required. To get that, all three major political parties, including the Maoists, should agree. 2/3 majority cannot be reached without the biggest party of the nation, the Maoists. If the 2/3 majority is not reached, and the constitution is not amended, there will be a vacuum in the state and we are not ready for it. So, at any cost, the parties must come together and amend the constitution.

The Maoists have already started their movement, asking for the resignation of the prime minister, formation of a national-unity government and a consensus for peace and constitution. I am not a Maoists and I hate to admit this, but they are actually offering a solution.

Only when a national-unity government is made and consensus is reached, can there be 2/3 majority in the constitution assembly. The Maoists are not going to agree to constitution amendment when they are sidelined. So, to avoid a catastrophe, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal must resign and all political parties should work to form a national-unity government and amend the interim constitution.

These are my opinions and my opinions only. You are free to disagree. And, comments are appreciated. I would like to hear an alternate solution. But, stupid comments like “You are a Maoist” will not be tolerated. It is a simple logical argument: “If A says x and B says x. It does not mean that B is A.” I want to reiterate that I am NOT a Maoist. But, we are in a very crucial point in history. And, asking for resignation of MaKuNe seems like the only choice to me.

.. maybe, but to what end? Tomorrow- when some other party leads the government, someone else will have a problem. It is an endless cycle. I think, rather than being bullied out of the system by a bunch of idiots, and setting a bad precedent, MaKuNe would be better off holding his own..and negotiating a compromise of sorts. (Please do not be mistaken- I hate MaKuNe for the opportunistic bast**d he is_). Also, personally I think- if there was ever a good time for an army rule, this is it!

Maoists see a certain solution does not necessarily mean that is the right one....MKN resigning is not a big deal...the big deal is that it will be a surrender on the political norms that we want to be set in the new republic. We cant let a bunch of guys with opinions let us to believe that they are right and things oughta be as they want....for say 'Prachanda has to be the next PM'....more later

In desperation and absolutely saddened by the state of affairs back home, I ask why isn't a TAKEOVER in terms of the army or an autocracy not something worthwhile considering the hooligan-ism that has overwhelmed us all!! Do we really believe we are a nation 'ready' for democracy?? I've not been avidly following politics for a while, but I can't help but be involved now and I think there is no point in "talking" anymore.. we need action and URGENTLY! :-/ Thoughts?

As to be a part of Nepal's political solution and situation, I would like the bikalpa team to sort out the underlying problems that lie within the national boundary of Nepal and move to international arena. We have no capacity to change at once but we are in need of recognizing the problems that have been pinned to us through the political struggles of past. So, to move on with the ongoing chaos please determine what political debate are you willing to support. What political practices are our leaders of Nepal are following. If you could give information about the political practices of Nepal, then we can formulate a poll or form groups to debate what political practice is suitable....the right winged or left winged....it all depends on the current situation of Nepal. If you guys could sort out the basic idea of politics I think more people will participate and debate on it....that's what we need to do I think...Good luck ...
